<results_summary> The effect of physical activity on postpartum anthropometric measurments

Abstract

Introduction: Pregnancy has been associated with excess weight gain and development of overweight, with such changes persisting beyond 1 year postpartum. Postpartum weight retention is a predictor of future obesity and weight gain. The aim of this study was to determine the effect of physical activity on anthropometric measurements in women in the postpartum period.

Methods : This was a randomized controlled trial study. It was performed among 70 women who had given birth in the past 6week to 6 months. Women were randomly assigned to either: a) a 3-month intervention to increase physical activity with use pedometer, or b) a control group received the routine outpatient department obstetric educational program. Assessments of anthropometric measurements including(body weight, bodymass index, waist and hip circumferences, waist to hip ratio (WHR )) physical activity were conducted at pre- intervention and 3 months post- intervention. Data were analyzed by paired and independent t-tests,wilcoxon and correlation test.
Result: The women in the intervention group successfully increased physical activity after 12weeks and a paired t-test showed a significant difference in the mean steps/day before and after the study and change in anthropometric measurements . Average change in weight(kg) ,BMI (kg/m²) was -2.07(1.78) ,-0.8(0.73)in the intervention group and -032(2.1),+0.05(0.83) in the comparison group respectively. Significant difference has been noted between weight and BMI befor to after the trial in intervention group(p</results_summary>
